"In this theoretical reflexion on the problem of cultural quality, aproposed is made for the determination of cultural quality for a giventext. This is done in terms of basically three anedytical dimensions,namely, the esthetic, the ethic and the ecstatic.The traditional conception of quality as an absolute standardapplicable to any cultural product must be abandoned. Instead, aproposal is made for the formulation of a set of criteria which are ableto measure the relativity of taste in a hierarchical society.The author emphasises the idea that the vahdity of culturalquality must be based on the concrete experience of the audience, i.e.on the multiple readings of the popular text that people make. This isconfirmed by studies on media reception."
