Institutional Arrangement of the Intermunicipal Consortium of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba for Management of Municipal Solid Waste

"Deficiencies in the management of solid waste disposal in modern cities has resulted in the improper treatment and disposal of such material causing negative social, economic and environmental impacts. This study looks at the legal aspects of the Inter-municipal Consortium of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba agreement and the way it impacted on the closure of the landfill site called "Caximba". This investigation is based on the research of literature and the study of qualitative concepts which were addressed in the institutional arrangement related to waste management, as well as on documentary research of project planning in Curitiba, with three steps: exploration, description and analytics. It appears that, despite progress in formal terms which has opened the way for new waste management possibilities, informal individual interests were also an important factor in the development of the Consortium."
