It took several decades of interaction and dialogue between human sciences and environmental sciences and a number of methodological advances for high altitude spaces to be considered as something other than immutable and atonic. Subjected to integrated interdisciplinary analysis, they reveal not one but many complex histories and dynamics. Historicising mountain areas reverses the conventional view of Pyrenean societies, and offers a reconsideration of valley sys-tems. It is clear that teams involved in this type of research face the problem of acquiring pri-mary information. Archaeological prospection is an essential prerequisite for any archaeological research in the high mountains, with its own specific issues and particular methodological chal-lenges. It is now possible to consider new procedures for acquiring archaeological information, based on five major advances: the diversification and miniaturisation of sensors, allowing them to be transported on drones; a significant reduction in the acquisition costs of aerial vehicles; an increasingly safe flight environment; data processing tools and work on computer ergonomics; and the opening up of possibilities offered by artificial intelligence, offering the promise of future possibilities for optimising the detection of archaeological remains in high-altitude environments.
