À partir d’une enquête ethnographique dans deux salles de boxe situées dans des quartiers populaires en France et aux États-Unis, cet article montre en quoi la socialisation à la boxe relève d’une transmission de capital culturel. La proximité sociale entre entraîneurs et boxeurs facilite le travail de socialisation de ces derniers qui s’engagent dans une transformation de soi indissociablement corporelle et culturelle. En retour, l’accumulation de capital culturel produit des effets différenciés sur les espaces sociaux étudiés. L’ethnographie comparée met en lumière des points de convergence et de divergence dans les principes constitutifs de la stratification sociale des jeunesses populaires racisées en France et aux États-Unis. L’analyse du processus d’accumulation du capital culturel montre en quoi les destins sociaux possibles divergent pour les boxeurs aux États-Unis et en France : pour les premiers, ce processus ouvre davantage d’espoir de mobilité sociale et résidentielle ; pour les seconds, il donne plus accès à des statuts locaux.
Based upon ethnographic fieldwork in two boxing gyms located in lower class neighborhoods in France and in the United States, this article suggests that socialization in boxing partakes in a transmission of cultural capital. The social proximity between coaches and boxers facilitates the latter’s work of socialization, as they embark upon a process of transformation of the self that is indissolubly bodily and cultural. Conversely, the accumulation of cultural capital generates differentiated effects within the social spaces under scrutiny. Compared ethno- graphy sheds light on the convergences and divergences that characterize the constitutive principles driving the social stratification of lower class youth in France and in the United States. The analysis of the process of accumulation of cultural capital shows that the range of possible social destinies is different for boxers in the United States and in France: for the former, this process sustains real hopes of social and residential mobility; for the latter, it opens the way toward local status.
Auf der Grundlage ethnographischer Unterschungen in zwei Boxstudios in Arbeitervierteln in Frankreich und den USA zeigt dieser Aufsatz auf, wie die Sozialisierung im Boxsport zur Weitergabe kulturellen Kapitals beiträgt. Die soziale Nähe zwischen Trainern und Boxern befördert die Sozialisierung letzterer in ihrer Selbsttransformation, in der körperliche und kulturelle Aspekte eng verwoben sind. Die Akkumulation kulturellen Kapitals hat jedoch differenzierte und bislang wenig untersuchte Auswirkungen auf den sozialen Raum. Eine vergleichende Ethnographie wirft ein Licht auf die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in der sozialen und rassischen Stratifikation der Jugendlichen in den Arbeitervierteln in Frankreich und den USA. Die Untersuchung der Prozesse der Akkumulation kulturellen Kapitals zeigt, wie sich das Profil der sozialen Möglichkeiten für die Boxer in den USA und Frankreich unterscheidet: für erstere eröffnet der Prozess die Hoffnung auf so- ziale und residentielle Mobilität; für letztere eröffnet er in erster Linie die Aussicht auf die Erlangung eines lokalen Status..
A partir de una investigaron etnográfica en dos salas de boxeo situadas en los barrios populares en Francia y en Estados Unidos, este articulo muestra cómo la socialización al boxeo enfrenta una transmisión del capital cultural. La proximidad social entre entrenadores y boxeadores facilita en trabajo de la socialización de estos últimos que se comprometen en una transformación de si indisociablemente corporal y cultural. A cambio, la acumulación de capital cultural produce efectos diferenciados sobre los espacios sociales estudiados. La etnografía comparada destaca puntos de convergencia y divergencia en los principios constitutivos de la estratificación social de jóvenes populares racializados en Francia y en Estados Unidos. El análisis del proceso de acumulación del capital cultural muestra como los destinos sociales posibles divergen para los boxeadores en los Estados Unidos y en Francia: para los primeros, ese proceso abre más esperanzas de movilidad social y residencial: para los segundos, da más acceso a posiciones locales.
