La vieille Delhi, longtemps appelée « walled city » par opposition à la nouvelle ville construite par les Britanniques au début du XXe siècle, n’est qu’une des sept villes qui se sont succédé sur le territoire de l’actuelle mégalopole, chacune ajoutant au patrimoine monumental, plus ou moins entretenu, qui est le sceau de la ville. L’article présente la voix de divers écrivains contemporains, essentiellement hindiphones, sur cette ville à la fois habitée par son propre passé, et aujourd’hui en pleine mutation, pour s’imposer, en tant que « world city » comme capitale de l’Inde globalisée, cette « Shining India » de tous les espoirs.

Old Delhi, long called the “Walled City” in contrast with the new town built by the British in the early twentieth century, is only one of the seven cities founded in succession on the territory of the present megalopolis, each of them adding to the architectural heritage, more or less maintained, which is the mark of the city. The paper presents the voice of various contemporaneous Indian writers, commenting on this city both inhabited by its own past and today fast changing in order to assert itself as the “World City,” true capital of a multi-legendary Shining India.
