“Here’s To Holy Fathers”: from the Law of The Father To The Love of a Father in Michael Ondaatje’s Writing

Throughout his works, Michael Ondaatje increasingly foregrounds “good”, present fathers in place of “bad,” absent ones. In “Letters & Other Worlds” (1971) and Running in the Family (1982), Ondaatje replaces his unknowable, self-destructive father with a utopian, invented father. In various parent poems, Ondaatje shifts from writing of his absent father to writing of himself as a present father, enacting the “letters of complete empathy” he previously ascribed to his utopian father. Although the utopian fathers of Ondaatje’s poetry and fiction might merely reinscribe the patriarchal father, they might also progressively re-vision the Law of the Father through fathers’ love.
