In symmetric constructions, two constituents, of the same distributional nature, establish an identical semantic relationship with the predicative element, which necessarily implies a reciprocity and an ability to swap positions or appear coordinated in a given syntactic position, without altering the overall meaning of the sentence. The purpose of this paper is to clarify this syntactic and semantic concept, illustrate the diversity of symmetric constructions and survey the relevant syntactic-semantic phenomena, in order to propose a program of systematic investigation of symmetrical constructions in Portuguese.

Em construções simétricas, dois constituintes, de igual natureza distribucional, estabelecem com o elemento predicativo uma idêntica relação semântica, que implica necessariamente uma reciprocidade e de que resulta poderem trocar de posições ou aparecerem coordenados numa dada posição sintáctica sem que, apesar disso, o significado global da frase se altere. O objectivo deste texto é o de precisar este conceito sintáctico e semântico, ilustrar a diversidade das construções simétricas e referir brevemente os diversos fenómenos sintáctico-semânticos relevantes, a fim de melhor propor um programa de investigação sistemática das construções simétricas em Português.
