Ferdinand Ferber et l’aviationFerdinand Ferber (1862-1909) est une figure peu connue des précurseurs de l’aviation française. Alors que son œuvre aéronautique ne couvre qu’une dizaine d’années, elle demeure fondamentale car il est le premier Français à avoir compris l’importance des essais de vol d’Otto Lilienthal dont il s’est inspiré pour ses premiers appareils. Souhaitant créer un mouvement d’opinion en faveur de l’aviation, il s’y consacre inlassablement par ses écrits, ses conférences et surtout par ses expérimentations publiques. Il cherche aussi à entrer en relation avec tous ceux qui travaillent sur le plus lourd que l’air. C’est ainsi qu’il est en relation avec Octave Chanute et les frères Wright. Sa disparition précoce, alors qu’il vient de publier un livre remarquable, L’Aviation, met un terme à l’époque des précurseurs du plus lourd que l’air.

While his aeronautical work covers only a decade, it remains of fundamental importance because he was the first Frenchman to have understood the significance of the test flights of Otto Lilienthal which were the inspiration for his first aircraft. In his desire to create a public opinion in favour of aviation, he devoted himself tirelessly to his writings, to his lectures, and especially to his experiments in public. He tried also to enter into relationship with all those working on heavier than air models. That is how he came into contact with Octave Chanute and the Wright brothers. His untimely death, just after the publication of his remarkable L’Aviation, brought to a close the era of the heavier-than-air precursors.
