"In Madrid, mu­ nicipal markets –former elements which configured the neighborhood and its social relations– are now going through a process of ongoing transformation due to public policies driven by new investors, and to the de ­ velopment of gentrification processes in certain urban areas. Consequently, different market models are in conflict. Caught in the logic of “renew or perish”, the renovation of the markets represents a struggle for urban space, expressed in the dichotomy of the right to the city over the right of consumption."
