La notion de dénomination appartient au paysage de la sémantique lexicale, en France, depuis le début des années 80. Son implantation problématique est liée d’une part au contexte de sa réception et notamment à la prégnance du paradigme immanentiste dans la description linguistique. Un autre facteur important est le périmètre de la notion elle-même, telle qu’elle a été introduite. Nous montrerons que la dénomination caractérise une propriété sémiotique fondamentale du signe linguistique, mais qu’elle doit faire l’objet d’un réexamen pour donner la mesure de son efficience descriptive. Dans une première partie, nous reviendrons sur l’implicite théorique auquel cette notion est adossée et, notamment, sa relation avec le processus de lexicalisation. Une seconde partie proposera une approche modulaire de la dénomination sur la base de critères ontologiques, sociolinguistiques et vériconditionnels. L’objectif est de mettre en lumière l’étendue du champ d’application de la notion, laquelle fournit un puissant levier pour la description du lexique et des relations sémantiques.

Towards a reexamination of the concept of nomination 1980’s, the concept of the denomination has figured in lexical semantics in France. Its acceptance has been hindered by the context of its reception, in particular the dominance of the immanentist stance in linguistic description. Another important factor has been the very scope of the concept itself, as it was introduced. It will be shown in this article that the denomination embodies a very basic semiotic property of the linguistic sign, but that it needs to be re-examined if it is to be an efficient tool of description. In the first part, analysis will be made of the implicit theory, in particular its relationship with the process of lexicalisation. In the second part, a modular approach to the denomination will be put forward on the basis of ontological, sociolinguistic and vericonditional criteria. The aim is to shed light on just how far the concept of the denomination can be taken, so that it can act as a powerful tool for the description of the lexicon and of semantic relationships.
