Valère Novarina occupe par rapport à Jean Paulhan et sa notion de « terreur » dans les lettres une position très particulière : d’un côté des ambitions iconoclastes, son désir de brûler les idoles de la tradition ; de l’autre, une conscience rhétorique et une vénération pour les œuvres de siècles passés où rhétorique et théologie sont inextricablement mêlées. De cette conjoncture naît une fascination pour l’engendrement, l’auto-propagation linguistique qui trouve son corollaire dans une théologie originaire où le premier livre biblique occupe une position primordiale. Adaptant la démonstration d’Elaine Scarry sur la problématique du corps et de la croyance dans la Genèse, cet article montre comment ses analyses illuminent l’esthétique dramatique de Novarina.

Valère Novarina occupies an unusual position with respect to Jean Paulhan and his concept of literary “terror”. On the one hand, the aim of his poetics is innovative and iconoclastic ; on the other, he venerates a rhetorical tradition dating back to the ancients in which rhetoric and theology are inextricably interwoven. The result is a fascination with different formal techniques of linguistic propagation and a corresponding theology of creation modelled on the first book of the bible. Adapting Elaine Scarry’s commentary linking the body and belief in Genesis, this article shows how her analyses illuminate Novarina’s theatrical aesthetics.
