Cet article s’intéresse aux vingt premières années de l’histoire de la bibliothèque de l’Organisation internationale du travail. Il étudie l’origine de ses fonds, le choix de ses acquisitions, le classement et les modalités d’accès aux documents, afin de montrer que la bibliothèque était plus orientée vers la recherche en sciences sociales et l’utilité pratique que vers la conservation. Il décrit les débuts chaotiques de la bibliothèque face à l’arrivée de documents en « flux tendu » et en l’absence de formation au métier. À la fois bibliothèque, centre de documentation et laboratoire international de sciences sociales, la bibliothèque de l’Organisation internationale du travail est une institution dont l’organisation matérielle est caractéristique du nouveau régime documentaire des années 1920.

This paper focuses on the first twenty years of the history of the International Labor Organization library. I study the origin of its collection, its purchases, its filing system and its access conditions to the documents, in order to show that the library was more oriented towards research in social sciences and action, than towards book preservation and storage. I describe the chaotic start of the library, which was facing the lack of a trained librarian as well as the continual arrival of upstream flow of books. As a library, a center of documentation and a laboratory of social sciences, the International Labor Organization is analyzed like a sociological institution which material organization was typical of the 1920s new documentary regime.
