As researchers in the field of learning and instruction of students for which the school institution declares a diagnostic and assigns more or less inclusive school resources, we are constrained, for some of us despite our first values and convictions, to designate the students, the children and youth, concerned by our research work, by our training interventions. With respect to a situated approach to study teachers’ and students’ activity within different classroom contexts and situations, this article aims at contributing to the issue of designations. In this perspective, we will present theoretical reasons as well as heuristic values motivating our own choice to use the expression “Students – institutionally declared – with special educational needs”.
