De la marginalité et des origines : la difficile reconnaissance du patrimoine et de l’art juifs en France

For personal reasons, I wished to enter into Jewish culture as an architectural historian, the simplest way for me to launch a research project on the synagogues of France, which was a completely neglected topic, due to prejudices and a sclerosis of academic thought. This was exciting because it required adapting the discipline to my subject that did not fit into its usual frameworks… Hence the recourse to anthropology and a profound revision of the methodological and categorical foundations of an art history that made no room for synagogues or Jewish art. My work has taken the form of books, exhibitions, and conferences, in order to get this heritage recognized, even in Jewish circles, but also with an involvement in its safeguard and its transmission, as in the recognition of certain actors or collectors. Such an approach could not but lead to a reflection on identities.
