In the autumn of 2009, Tanzanians prepared to mark the tenth anniversary of the death of their first President, Julius Kambarage Nyerere, who had died in London in October 1999. Yet at the same time as Tanzanians were commemorating their former President, they were also invoking his memory as a guide to the future.
