Marie-Françoise Alamichel, « "ænne swiðe sellichne mon": Arthur and the Apocalypse in Laȝamon’s Brut », HAL-SHS : littérature, ID : 10670/1.lhq07g
This paper deals with King Arthur as the hero of a prophetic "loft-song", it focuses on the Arthur of Merlin's dreams and prophecies in Laȝamon’s Brut. It argues that Laȝamon was greatly influenced by the Apocalypse. In the Middle Ages people were fascinated by two events, the Creation and the Apocalypse, the beginnings and end of the created world, and Laȝamon’s poetic handling of time bears witness to this fascination. Throughout his Brut the function of Merlin, a prophet chosen by God, is to announce that Arthur, a king chosen by God, will come back at the end of time to make of Britain the Holy Jerusalem on earth.
