The ideas of universal history, of linear evolution and of predestination, as they traditionally define the Christian vision of history, are usually implicit, but «rarely expressed» in mediaeval historical works. Byzantine historiography passes from an annalizing chronical of universal history to more personal works, in which the material is «organized» around a historical hero. Here the providentialist representations proper to the Middle Ages give way to an approach closer to the historical philosophical conceptions of the humanist era. (Transl. by J. Dudley).

Les idées d'histoire universelle, d'évolution linéaire et de prédestination, telles qu'elles définissent traditionnellement la vision chrétienne de l'histoire, sont ordinairement implicites mais «rarement exprimées» dans les travaux historiques du moyen âge. L'historiographie byzantine va d'une chronique annalisante de l'histoire universelle à des œuvres plus personnelles, où le matériau se trouve «organisé» autour d'un héros historique. On s'écarte ici des représentations providentalistes propres au moyen âge pour se rapprocher des conceptions philosophiques historiques de l'époque humaniste.
