Résumé
What we propose to examine in this article, taking advantage of our field experience as classicists involved in databases projects about the Ancient Greek and Roman World, is the intersection between a theoretical approach, that of a philologist whose field is the study of texts as a vehicle of thought, and a technology-based approach, namely that of computer science research and engineering. As far as we are concerned, this intersection consists of attempts (and difficulties) to speak a common language, and changing philological practices under the influence of the computer-based approach. To put it differently, one of the most important questions we are facing as classicists is how to translate a text-based approach into a data-based one. Our aim is to show how this dual approach can be the starting point of a critical view of our practice and of our discipline.
