Au début du xve siècle, un certain héraut Bavière apparaît à La Haye, dans la suite des comtes de Hollande, Zélande et Hainaut de la Maison de Bavière. En tant qu’auteur d’un armorial et de chroniques, Bavière se révèle, pour autant qu’on puisse le vérifier, un des premiers hérauts-historiens. Dans ses œuvres, il se présente comme Bavière autrefois Gueldre, roi d’armes des Ruyers. Il doit sa renommée en tant qu’auteur du Wapenboek Gelre (Armorial Gueldre) et d’ Ehrenreden. Dans cette contribution, le point est fait sur ses activités littéraires en Hollande. Le résultat en est bien différent de son travail en Gueldre: tandis qu’en Gueldre l’aspect biographique domina, le héraut se consacra en Hollande avant tout à la recherche étendue des origines des dynasties et des royaumes. En fait, en tant que Gueldre, il se servit d’un genre qui convenait à la vie itinérante d’un héraut qui était constamment en route entre cour et champ de batailles. En Hollande, il apparaît comme l’historiographe officiel du comte Guillaume VI de Hollande et Zélande. La différence de travail semble correspondre à une différence de fonction.

A Historian-Herald at the Beginning of the xvth Century: Bavière (Formerly Gueldre)At the beginning of the xvth century, a certain herald Bavière turns up in The Hague, in the suite of the counts of Holland, Zeeland and Hainault of the House of Bavaria. As author of an armorial and of chronicles, Bavière proves to be, as far as can be known, one of the first historian-heralds. In his works, he introduces himself as Bavière, formerly Gueldre, king of arms of the Ruyers. He owes his fame to his authoring the Wapenboek Gueldre (Gueldre Armorial) and some Ehrenreden. In this paper, his literary activity in Holland is reviewed. This latter proves to be very different from his work in Guelders: while in Guelders the biographical aspect was prominent, in Holland the herald dedicated himself essentially to extensive research on the origins of the dynasties and the kingdoms. As a matter of fact, as Gueldre, he resorted to a genre that suited the roving life of a herald that was constantly on the move between court and battlefield. In Holland, he seems to assume the role of official biographer of William VI of Holland and Zeeland. The difference seems to correspond to a difference in function.
