The problem of altruism in evolutionary biology is introduced in relation to human morality. I argue that the reduction of altruism from the inclusive fitness theories of sociobiology has yielded a levels of description problem that should be avoided. In the second part of the paper, some more recent research in comparative psychology is reviewed which shows a complex landscape of prosocial motives present in other primates. These have been labelled ''building blocks of morality". In the present article, I propose a critical approach to the question of evolutionary elements of morality that goes beyond altruism approaches and introduces the naturalizable complexity of norm following behavior.
