Les relations entre la gauche républicaine et les catholiques depuis 1789 est l’histoire d’une méfiance réciproque faite de moments de rejet et d’apaisement. L’influence politique fut, jusqu’à la Première Guerre mondiale, le terrain de l’affrontement de ces deux visions du monde qui paraissaient irréconciliables. Mais la loi de Séparation de 1905, puis la Grande Guerre inaugure une longue période de coexistence pacifique et constructive. À l’aube du xxi e siècle, la résurgence du fait religieux, les crispations identitaires et la fragilisation de la démocratie réactivent les antagonismes dont la Manif pour tous fut récemment l’acmé.

The relationship between the Republican Left and Catholics since 1789 describes that relationship as one of mutual defiance characterised by moments of rejection and appeasement. Until the First World War, the realm of political influence was the stage onto which these two seemingly irreconcilable visions of the world would oppose each other. But the 1905 law installing the separation of Church and State inaugurated a long period of pacific and constructive coexistence. At the dawn of the 21st century, the recrudescence of religion as well as tensions around communal identities and the weakening of democracy have reactivated the old antagonism – the Manif Pour Tous movement being one of the latest avatars of this renewed conflict.
