Everyone knows that Russians read mostly European literature, in the original and in translation. Judging by Tat’iana Larina’s bookshelf in Eugene Onegin (1824-1831), we might assume that, like its author Aleksandr N. Pushkin, many read Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Lawrence Sterne, Samuel Richardson, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Madame Germaine de Staël in expensive French editions.
