The story of Mary Queen of Scots as a dramatic subject had been on Schiller’s mind since as early as 1783. It featured again on the so-called ‘Big List of Dramas’ that he started around 1797, as number four (Wallenstein is number two). This marks Schiller’s return to dramatic production after years of history-writing and philosophical study.
