Il a souvent été reproché à Foucault et à Canguilhem de ne pas avoir rendu justice aux sciences humaines. Il nous semble au contraire que leur œuvre est centrée sur les sciences humaines et leur histoire. Mais, comme Comte avant eux, ces auteurs distinguent entre les sciences humaines, valorisant certaines disciplines, comme la médecine, en critiquant d’autres, comme la psychologie. On peut parler en ce sens d’une véritable « désunité » des sciences humaines. L’histoire des sciences humaines qu’écrivent Canguilhem et Foucault éclaire ainsi certaines des caractéristiques du style français en histoire des sciences.

Foucault and Canguilhem are often blamed for not having done justice to the human sciences. On the contrary, it seems to us that their work is focused on the human sciences and their history. Yet, like Comte before them, these authors draw a distinction between the various human sciences, privileging certain disciplines, such as medicine, whilst criticizing others, such as psychology. In that sense, there indeed exists something like a genuine “disunity” of the human sciences. The history of the human sciences written by Canguilhem and Foucault sheds light on some features of the French style in the history of science.
