L’accès des directions financières (DF) aux positions stratégiques des grandes entreprises est un phénomène récent, souvent imputé à la financiarisation des économies occidentales (années 1980-2000) et associé au mode de gestion fondé sur la valeur actionnariale. La montée en puissance des DF a cependant été préparée par une évolution amorcée au tournant des XIXe-XXe siècles et qui s’est nourrie des besoins de coordination de la grande entreprise moderne puis de la complexité croissante de la gestion financière.Comment la direction financière s’est-elle organisée par rapport aux autres directions de la firme aux différentes étapes de son évolution ? Par quels mécanismes la financiarisation finale a-t-elle favorisé la prise de pouvoir des financiers au sein des entreprises ? Quelle part les financiers ont-ils prise dans le processus de financiarisation ?

From the function of finance to financial departmentsFinancial departments within large firms became more important during the period between 1980 and 2010 because of the financialisation of the world economy and the rise of shareholder value management. It should not be forgotten, however, that financial functions have a long history. Throughout the 20th century, financial activities within firms were growing in size and importance along with the need for greater coordination of big businesses and the increasing sophistication of financial and monetary decisions.This paper looks at how financial departments evolved inside the organisational framework of large firms at different stages of their development. It also traces at how the need for financial expertise has promoted chief financial officers from the back office to top management and considers the role played by finance managers in the process of financialisation.
