Export processing zones in the islands. The Export Processing Zones of which there are about eighty, currently concern 35 countries, of which about 10 are islands. They were devised as a means of bypassing the protectionist measures of the major countries where they had hoped to develop a market. They benefit from preferential tax regulations. They represent a means of attracting large-scale investors to geographical areas which until now have only been marginal. There are numerous factors which influence the choice of host-country : political stability, discipline and good level of education of the work force, and a long commercial tradition would seem to be elements that are of advantage to the smaller island countries.

Les zones franches industrielles d’exportation (au nombre de quatre-vingts environ) intéressent actuellement trente-cinq pays dont une dizaine de pays insulaires. Elles ont été conçues comme des moyens de contourner les mesures protectionnistes de grands pays visés comme marchés. Elles bénéficient d’un régime fiscal de faveur. Elles constituent un moyen d’attirer de grands investisseurs dans des zones géographiques jusqu’alors marginales. Les facteurs qui influencent le choix du pays-hôte sont nombreux ; la stabilité politique, la discipline et l’instruction de la main-d’œuvre, une longue tradition commerciale semblent avantager les petits pays insulaires.
