The first western travelers to approach northern Cameroon were Major Denham, Captain Clapperton and Doctor Oudney (1826). If they never reached the "mousgoum" country, they nevertheless quote "the Mosgô", according to the name that the Mandara (Wandala) gave it. We thus see that this name, later spelled in “musgu”, is an exogenous designation of the population concerned.

Les premiers voyageurs occidentaux à avoir abordé le nord du Cameroun sont le major Denham, le capitaine Clapperton et le docteur Oudney (1826). S'ils n'ont jamais atteint le pays « mousgoum », ils citent cependant « le Mosgô », d'après le nom que les Mandara (Wandala) lui donnaient. On voit ainsi que ce nom, plus tard orthographié en « musgu », est une appellation exogène de la population concernée.
