This chapter proposes to return to a key moment in the process of grammatisation: the constitution of the techno-scientific notion of information in American cybernetics. It turns out that cybernetics constitutes a moment not only of technical invention, but also of speculative, philosophical reflection on the nature of the inventions in question and the conceptual terms that accompany them. The chapter focuses on one particular dimension of cybernetics: the link between ontology and politics of information. In terms of ontology, the question of the nature of information runs through cybernetics, in the form of a split between symbol and signal. The aim is to question this distinction and its consequences in the perspective of the grammatisation process, by returning to the debates of the 7th Macy Conference concerning the distinction between 'analogue' and 'digital'. These internal cybernetic debates about information ontologies also have a political dimension for Norbert Wiener. The cybernetic conception of information as physical fact leads to a set of commitments, which have helped to structure the trajectory of the cybernetic movement. It is therefore this nexus - ontology and politics of information - that I wish to submit for discussion in the light of contemporary issues.

Ce chapitre propose de revenir à un moment clé du processus de grammatisation : la constitution de la notion technoscientifique d’information dans la cybernétique américaine. Il se trouve que la cybernétique constitue un moment non seulement d’invention technique, mais aussi de réflexion spéculative, philosophique, sur la nature des inventions en cours et les termes conceptuels qui les accompagnent. Le chapitre se concentre sur une dimension particulière de la cybernétique : la liaison entre ontologie et politique de l’information. Sur le plan de l’ontologie, la question de la nature de l’information parcourt la cybernétique, sous la forme d’un clivage entre symbole et signal. Il s’agit d’interroger cette distinction et ses conséquences dans la perspective du processus de grammatisation, en revenant notamment sur les débats de la 7e conférence Macy à propos de la distinction entre « analogique » et « numérique ». Ces débats internes à la cybernétique quant aux ontologies de l’information possèdent, en outre, une dimension politique chez Norbert Wiener. La conception cybernétique de l’information comme donnée physique conduit à un ensemble d’engagements, qui ont participé à structurer la trajectoire du mouvement cybernétique. C’est donc ce nexus - ontologie et politique de l’information – que je souhaite soumettre à discussion à partir des enjeux contemporains.
