Patrimoine sans limite ? La mondialisation du tourisme comme opérateur d’un « tout-patrimoine »

Le champ de la mémoire est marqué depuis les années 1970 notamment par une « inflation patrimoniale ». Cet article vise à montrer comment le tourisme, à travers sa mondialisation, constitue non seulement un opérateur de la patrimonialisation, mais aussi de l’élargissement du champ patrimonial. Le phénomène touristique, à travers les touristes notamment, est régulièrement saisi comme une menace pour le patrimoine. Or, les acteurs investis dans le tourisme ont en réalité largement contribué à inventer le « monument historique » et continuent d’inventer de « nouveaux patrimoines ». Pour autant, la dynamique de co-constitution du tourisme et du « tout-patrimoine » reste lacunaire, et la patrimonialisation peut même constituer un enjeu pour la « dé-touristification ».

The field of memory is marked since the 1970s in particular by a “heritage inflation”. This article aims at showing how the tourism, through its globalization, is not only an operator of the fabrication of heritage, but of the extension of the heritage field also. The tourist phenomenon, through the tourists in particular, is regularly seized as a threat for the heritage. Yet, the actors who are involved in the tourism widely contributed to invent the “historic monument” and keep on inventing “new heritages”. However, the dynamics of co-constitution of tourism and “all-heritage” remains incomplete, and the fabrication of heritage can even constitute a stake for “dé-touristification”.
