Des ouvriers lunetiers s’associent en 1849 à Paris pour être en mesure de vendre eux-mêmes leur production. Le succès les transforme en une sorte de patron collectif : la Société des Lunetiers combine un étonnant régime d’assemblée à la promotion interne jusqu’aux plus hautes fonctions et à la transmission interne du capital. L’entreprise en vient à dominer une grande partie du marché français de l’optique à la fin du XIXe siècle, s’annexant et développant plusieurs usines dans le département de la Meuse, pour fournir la vente en gros aux opticiens détaillants. Mais par son mode de fonctionnement et de reproduction introverti, elle s’interdit le recours à des capitaux et à des capacités humaines en provenance de l’extérieur. Il s’ensuivit au début du XXe siècle un certain retard face à la concurrence. Le redressement et l’expansion mondiale seront dans les années 1950-1960 le résultat d’importantes innovations réussies en matière de produits (verres progressifs en particulier).
