Sidi-bel-Abbes, third city of Oranie was a modern town with advanced urbanism when Algeria gained its independence. Prosperity was gained through her natural resources mainly through agriculture. The French Foreign Legion equally played an important role during the early periods of construction in Sidi-bel-Abbes. The city had a world wide reputation of having a mixed population due to the presence of Legionnaires coming from different ethnic back grounds. The Legion adopted this city as their main head quarters which served as a home base for Legionnaires. Their motto “ pax et labor” meaning “peace and work” resumes the history of the city and the Foreign Legion.
