L’auteur interroge les processus de paternalité : leur ébauche durant la grossesse, à l’arrivée du bébé, en postnatal. Les fonctions paternelles sont étudiées, mises en perspectives et articulées avec les fonctions maternelles. Les transmissions paternelles sont distinguées tant dans les interactions réelles que fantasmatiques. Des observations cliniques père/bébé viennent éclairer ces domaines ; y compris dans l’instauration de l’identité sexuée du bébé en devenir.

The author examines the processes of fathering: their emergence during pregnancy, on the arrival of the baby, and in postnatal care. The paternal functions are studied, clarified and linked up with the maternal functions. Paternal transmissions are distinguished both in real as well as fantasy-based interactions. Clinical observations of father/baby interactions are used to throw light on these domains, including in the establishment of the gendered identity of the future baby.
