In 1854, the Imperial Russian Historical Society published a portrait, in numbers, of Russia’s postal system. 3,950 relay stations, the Society reported, formed the system’s spine. Mail couriers, imperial officials, and even private travellers could find at these “posts” all manner of travel necessities—above all, fresh drivers and draft animals.
