À travers un renoncement pulsionnel, le sujet aura obscurément reçu d’un Autre, au titre de l’identification, un certain nombre de significations de lui-même idéales et surmoïques. C’est en celles-ci qu’il va maintenant s’offrir au monde. Mais en s’offrant et en les offrant, c’est à la recherche de ce en quoi il en est assigné qu’il se trouve, cherchant à s’en délester, pour, en un Autre toujours, et au-delà de lui-même, continuer à attendre et à créer ce qui serait sa propre signification. Ainsi, en ce constamment reçu et ce constamment réoffert, va se dessiner le circuit d’une Dette qui sera celui-là même de la production de Sens. La Dette est Dette de Sens. Son sentiment et son concept apparaîtront au sujet, au-delà de ses idéaux, de ses impératifs surmoïques et de sa culpabilité, au titre du savoir qu’il aura acquis d’être inscrit dans une Loi universelle qui transcende les avatars singuliers de l’échange et l’inscrit dans la redevance. Constituer sa propre Dette, ce, sera ainsi renouer à l’infini avec une Loi fondatrice rendue méconnaissable par un Surmoi dont il faut s’affranchir. C’est en cet affranchissement, qui n’est ni rupture ni soumission mais transformation, que le sujet s’accomplira dans sa quête de Sens aussi bien que dans son tracé éthique. Pour qu’il le puisse cependant, il faudra ou il aura fallu qu’au fond de sa détresse, il ait rencontré la solidarité et la compassion inter-humaine.

Debt, Superego and Compassion. In renouncing certain drives, the subject receives from the Other, in veiled form, as part of the identification process, a certain number of ideal, superegoistic meanings of self. These are the means through which the subject then offers him or herself to the outside world. Yet in offering him or herself and these meanings along with this, it is in the search for the role to which the subject is assigned that the subject finds him/herself, in the quest to free the self, in the form of an Other always, over and beyond self, continuing to wait for and create what the own meaning of self is. So, in this continual to and fro of what is received and what is constantly offered back, the circular pattern of debt is built up, the pattern that then helps to produce Meaning. The Debt is a Debt of Meaning. The feeling and concept of this becomes clear to the subject, over and beyond the subject’s ideals, through the superego’s demands and guilt, through the knowledge that the subject has acquired from being part of a Universal Law that transcends the specific incarnations of exchange and draws up the bill of debt. Building up one’s own debt means rebuilding a bond with the infinity of a founding Law that the Superego has obscured, a superego from which one must then free oneself. In freeing oneself, a gesture that is neither a breach nor a submission but rather a transformation, the subject reaches the goal of his/her quest for Meaning as well as through his/her ethical trajectory. For this to be able to happen however, the subject must have or should have, in the depths of his/her distress, encountered some solidarity or compassion from the human beings around him/her.
