« C’est beau pour nous d’être ici ! » : Réflexions sur une expérience de catéchèse par l’art

L’auteur présente une expérience de catéchèse par l’art à partir du tableau de Philippe de Champaigne La Dernière Cène, catéchèse proposée aux parents d’enfants se préparant à la première communion dans les paroisses du diocèse de Vérone. Cette expérience montre que l’œuvre d’art est une ressource pertinente pour une relecture de l’expérience de foi des participants, les personnes les moins pratiquantes se révélant d’ailleurs les plus sensibles à cette approche catéchétique.

Wondering if and how artistic works can become a “subject” of catechesis, the author introduces a catechesis using art that is offered in the parishes of the diocese of Verona to the parents of children preparing for First Communion. This catechesis is implemented using the painting of “The Last Supper” by Philippe de Champaigne. This artwork has proven to be a useful resource for rereading participants’ experience of faith, and those people who practice their religion the least appear most open to this catechetical approach. Four steps are offered to participants: placing themselves before the work, going into and behind the work, going beyond the work and returning to face the work once again, indicating the most important elements that emerged from the exercise. All this is placed in the perspective of the First Communion of their children.Four characteristics of this catechesis via art are then analysed: the work of art is considered a document/monument of tradition, the dynamism of the encounter rests on an implementation of the different phases (projective, analytical, contemplative/prayerful, of reappropriation), a process of tradition/restitution is initiated, with ancillary sciences and skills to be developed.
