Emilie Boyer, « Discourses of the guatemalan identity : El tiempo principia en Xibalbá of Luis de Lión (1985) and La otra cara of Gaspar Pedro González (1992) », HAL-SHS : littérature, ID : 10670/1.msn06i
This article makes a comparison between two novels whose authors have indigenous origins: El tiempo principia en Xibalbá of Luis de Lión, published in 1985 and La otra cara of Gaspar Pedro González published in 1992. This work aims to show the variety of the literary strategies used by the authors in order to denunciate the exploitation of indigenous people and produce a discourse on the inequalities between the indigenous people and the “ladinos”. We demonstrate how, while in González’s novel the ladino’s superiority is expressed through economic exploitation and political violence, Luis de Lión underlines the psychological hegemony by showing the sexual frustrations of the characters. The objective of González is the conservation of q’anjob’al culture while Lion’s point of view is rather metaphorical and reveals different dimensions of the ladinos’ domination.
