Depuis l’officialisation de la professionnalisation du rugby à xv en 1995, un marché mondialisé de joueurs internationaux s’est progressivement structuré. Favorisé par la lex ovalia et inscrit dans une logique néolibérale, il témoigne spécifiquement de la dialectique de la mondialisation. Si l’intensification et la multiplication de ces flux d’athlètes traduisent l’élargissement de ce marché et les connections croissantes entre les régions du monde, la mise en relief de territoires d’expatriation privilégiés confirme la fragmentation du monde, qui est marqué par de fortes asymétries entre les territoires nationaux, des inégalités économiques et des différences culturelles majeures.
