Résumé En

Translators are commonly seen as linguistic and intercultural mediators, particularly in crises. The translation process, output and performance are usually focused on, but little is known about translators in the bigger frame of society in a crisis. How they use their skills and qualifications and whether these are enough to survive are under-researched areas in Translation and Interpreting Studies. The present chapter explores the occupational situation of translation and interpreting professionals during the crisis in Syria. The research follows a qualitative interview-based methodology. The findings provide more insight into these individuals’ occupational and day-to-day situations, the challenges they encounter, their survival mechanisms and what consequences the crisis may have on the translation (and interpreting) sector in Syria. The research aims to contribute to the field of crisis translation in terms of the existing challenges and practices in crises and to extend its scope to view the psychological and financial effects on the translator.
