"Theoretical and numerical results arepresented to assure that a tunable,narrow-band, coherent THzradiation source can be based onparametric down-conversion in aphotonic crystal. Our proposal isbased on down-conversion mixingand a local-field enhancementmechanism that is available bytuning each of the two driving laserfields either to band-edge or to adefect mode in the band gap. Thefrequency of the down-convertedsignal can be tuned by intersectingtwo non co-linear laser sources. Thepolarizations are degenerate at normalincidence and have sub-THzdown-conversion maximum. For aspecific sample geometry we showthat by changing the angle ofincidence of one tunable laser to 30degrees the THz frequency is about11.5 THz for p-polarization and 3.5THz for s-polarization, since theangle-dependent transmissionspectrum is different for p- and spolarizations. The peak conversionefficiency for both polarizations isenhanced by over two orders ofmagnitude. Finally we also introducesome preliminary experimentalresults which agree with thenumerical results we present here."
