L’étude des comportements sociaux tient maintenant une place importante dans le champ des sciences cognitives et l’intérêt de comprendre les mécanismes sous-tendant les interactions sociales est aujourd’hui bien reconnu. Un facteur ayant favorisé la recherche dans ce domaine est la reconnaissance que les déficits de cognition sociale sont fortement reliés au fonctionnement social et occupationnel dans plusieurs populations cliniques. Le domaine de la cognition sociale peut toutefois être difficile à bien cerner étant donné la multiplicité des construits et les terminologies qui varient d’un auteur à l’autre, le manque de tests standardisés et le nombre important de tests expérimentaux. Dans ce contexte, nous proposons ici une synthèse des connaissances sur la cognition sociale, son évaluation, son importance pour le fonctionnement quotidien et les pistes d’intervention actuelles.

Studies targeting social behaviour now account for a significant proportion of the work done in cognitive sciences, and the benefits of understanding the mechanisms underlying social interactions are now well recognized. A factor that has encouraged research efforts in this domain is the recognition that social cognition deficits are strongly linked to social and occupational functioning in several clinical populations. This field can however be hard to fully appreciate given the large number of constructs and the terminologies that vary from one author to the next, the lack of standardized tests, and the large number of experimental tasks. Against this backdrop, we provide an overview of what we currently know about social cognition, its evaluation, its importance for everyday functioning, and the treatment approaches that are currently being developed.
