IntroductionSi les patients adultes sont dits exigeants en termes de discrétion du dispositif orthodontique, les facteurs influençant le choix du dispositif sont encore mal connus. ObjectifsL’objectif principal de cette étude était de déterminer s’il existe, chez les adultes, une corrélation entre l’importance du besoin de traitement orthodontique et l’exigence esthétique du dispositif orthodontique (appareil multi-attache avec des attaches vestibulaires métalliques ou céramiques, linguales ou aligneur). Les objectifs secondaires étaient d’évaluer l’impact des facteurs personnels du patient, son éventuel passé orthodontique et son besoin orthodontique ressenti. Matériels et méthodesLes patients ont été interrogés par questionnaire avant la première consultation. Un indice, en fonction de la discrétion du dispositif, a été utilisé. Le besoin de traitement a été calculé via les composantes dentaire et esthétique de l’IOTN. RésultatsCompte tenu de l’effectif, seules des tendances ont pu être émises. Le besoin de traitement réel n’a pas eu d’influence sur le choix du dispositif esthétique. Les patients les plus exigeants seraient les femmes, d’une trentaine d’années, célibataires, employées, cadres ou exerçant une profession supérieure, ayant déjà eu un traitement orthodontique et ayant déjà consulté récemment, en tant qu’adulte, un orthodontiste. Ces patients estimaient leur besoin de traitement orthodontique minime ou au contraire avéré. La durée de traitement estimée était de 17 mois. L’appareil multi-attache lingual était plébiscité devant les aligneurs comme étant le dispositif le plus esthétique. ConclusionUne étude à plus grande échelle est nécessaire pour déterminer l’influence propre à chaque facteur.

IntroductionAlthough adult patients are said to be demanding in terms of discretion of the orthodontic appliance, the factors influencing the choice of the appliance are still poorly understood. ObjectivesThe main objective of this study was to determine if there is a correlation, in adults, between the importance of the orthodontic treatment need and the aesthetic preference of the orthodontic appliance (metal braces, ceramic braces in buccal, lingual or aligner). The secondary objectives were to evaluate the impact of the patient's personal factors, his eventual orthodontic past and his perceived orthodontic need. Materials and MethodsPatients were interviewed by questionnaire before the first consultation. An index, depending of the discretion of the appliance, was used. The need for treatment was calculated via dental health component and aesthetic component of IOTN. ResultsGiven the size of the sample, only trends can be emitted. The real need for treatment had no influence on the choice of the aesthetic appliance. The most demanding patients would be women, in their thirties, single, employed, executive or practicing a higher profession, with previous orthodontic treatment and having recently consulted an orthodontist, as an adult. These patients felt that their orthodontic treatment need was minimal or significant. Patients estimated the duration of treatment at 17 months. Lingual was considered the most aesthetic appliance far ahead of the aligners. ConclusionA larger scale study is needed to determine the influence of each factor.
