Our First Abode. Traces of the Prenatal Period. What becomes of traces of prenatal life in the psyche ? The author posits the hypothesis that psychic life begins long before birth and attempts to identify reemergences of this in clinical examples and forms of artistic expression, more particularly painting and drawing. After Rank’s theory on birth as a traumatic experience, stressing the archaic, pre-Oedipal aspects of psychic construction and lying at the root of his split with Freud, and Ferenczi’s with Thalassa, it was Bion who expanded on this idea with his concept of birth as a ‘caesura, ’ at once a barrier but also a passage, and establishing a dialogue in his last works between ‘prenatals’ and ‘postnatals.’
