Fondée en 911 par le Traité de Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, la Normandie s’est construite autour d’une coutume unique, cristallisée dès le milieu du xie siècle, qui a su s’imposer à tous et sur l’ensemble du territoire, grâce notamment à une politique de pacification menée par les ducs de Normandie. Soucieux d’offrir une justice exemplaire aux Normands, les ducs ont mis en place une administration judiciaire efficace, dont certaines institutions furent exportées en Angleterre et en Sicile au xie siècle. De nos jours, la coutume de Normandie est toujours en vigueur dans les îles anglo-normandes, ainsi que certaines institutions d’origine féodale.

Founded in 911 by the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, the Duchy of Normandy was built around a single set of laws, which began to crystallise from the middle of the 11th century onwards, and which it managed to impose on all of its territories, thanks in particular to the policy of pacification implemented by the Dukes of Normandy. Out of a concern to offer the Normans an exemplary justice system, the Dukes set up an effective judicial administration, some of whose institutions were exported to England and Sicily in the 11th century. Norman Law still survives today in the legal systems of the Channel Islands, along with certain institutions of feudal origin.
