In its standard version, the «industrial revolu- tion » would be the story of an energy transition from wood to coal. However, in the 19th century, the consumption of wood, including firewood, increased in most countries. In addition, the extraction of coal was itself very timber-consum- ing. It is therefore necessary to tell the story of energy as a process of « energy symbiosis » and that of the industrial revolution not as a transition but as an amplification of all materials.
