"Violence is one of the most seriouschallenges in Latin American societies. Possessionand use of small arms and light weapons are consideredto be among the main factors behind it.The aim of this paper is to describe deaths andcrimes involving the use of a firearm in the Cityof Buenos Aires in 2002, focusing the health, justiceand police sectors. Data on mortality andcrimes were obtained from the National Systemsfor vital statistics and criminal information; dataon firearm seizures were supplied by the ArgentineFederal Police. Household interviews conductedfor a previous research on firearm-relatedvictimization were also used. An index of violentincidents was developed by police station. Therewere 1,304 deaths from violence, of which 23.7%were caused by a firearm. The police filed 171proceedings on the charge of homicides withcriminal intent, of which 60% had been committedwith a firearm. Of the 2,108 interviewed individuals,6.7% were victims of a crime committedwith a firearm. In 9.6% of surveyed householdsthere was a firearm. Seized firearms addedup to 1,887. The index of violent incidents washigher in police stations in the southwestern areaof the city that has worse living conditions. Theimpact of violence and its relation to firearms featuresas a major issue in the public agenda."
