From the middle of the 17th century onwards, the Catholic quarrel concerning grace saw the clash between three theological parties : the Jesuits, partisans of Molinism, the Dominicans, partisans of Thomism, the Jansenists, partisans of a return to strict Augustinianism, but who also wanted to clear themselves of the accusations for heresy by underlining their conformity to Thomism. This article tries to show how Fénelon, a convinced Molinist, attempted to turn the battlefronts around and justify the Catholic orthodoxy of the Thomist School in order to better discredit the philothomism of the Jansenists by breaking with the traditional antithomism of the partisans of Molinism.

À partir de la mi-XVIIe siècle, la querelle catholique de la grâce voit l’affrontement de trois partis théologiques, celui des jésuites, acquis au molinisme, celui des dominicains, défenseurs du thomisme, et celui des jansénistes, partisans d’un retour au strict augustinisme mais également soucieux de se défendre des accusations d’hérésie en mettant en avant leur conformité au thomisme. Le présent article tente de montrer comment Fénelon, moliniste convaincu, a tenté de renverser les fronts de la querelle et de justifier l’orthodoxie catholique de l’École de saint Thomas pour mieux discréditer le philothomisme des jansénistes en rompant avec l’antithomisme traditionnel des partisans du molinisme.
