Enjeux de l’évolution récente des formats commerciaux alimentaires en Europe de l’Est

Résumé 0

The breaking up of the socialist retailing system in Eastern Europe has been followed by the entry of Western European retailers into that area. Has their influence undermined the historical split between big retail formats and small local shops? The article argues that this is actually the case, by referring to the Polish and Bulgarian cases. We show that social, economic, and cultural environment is a determining factor in the emergence of “hybrid” sales formats, and in the future evolution of local shops. The article tries thus to identify the constraints to development of imported and national retailing and sketches the main features of the current distribution and consumption model in these countries. This evolution could be analyzed as a process combining importation, adaptation, and innovation.
