Angelo Mariani (1838-1914), a Corsican pharmacist, publicist and benefactor, produced on the environs of Paris in 1863 Mariani wine, a beverage made from a mixture of Bordeaux wine and coca leaves macerate. The product was successfully sold in Europe and the United States. The drink was presented as an exceptional energizer thanks to a complex advertising system consisting mainly of writers and illustrators. Artists created posters, illustrated stories and prints for Mariani, presenting him as the scientist who could cure and improve the lives of Europeans thanks to his research on the ancestral knowledge of the Incas. This article aims to show the ideological implications of the medical discourse in association with the artistic discourse in the second half of the 19th century.
