A major figure in European puppet repertoire, the character of Don Juan was widespread in Central Europe throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, thanks to the German language, that ensured its circulation from Italy and France to Hungary, the Czech countries and even Denmark. This appropriation process reflects the changes that thoroughly affected the theatrical and literary field of this period, between popular and high culture: it shows how the development of a national culture in those countries dealt with issues of oral transmission or entertainment. The evolution of the Don Juan character enables us to trace the invention of a new aesthetic category, that of popular art.

Figure majeure du répertoire pour marionnettes européen, le personnage de Don Juan a connu aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles une large diffusion dans l’espace centre-européen, par le truchement de la langue allemande qui assure sa circulation depuis l’Italie et la France jusqu’à la Hongrie, aux Pays tchèques ou au Danemark. Ce processus d’appropriation témoigne des évolutions qui affectent en profondeur le champ théâtral et littéraire de cette époque, entre culture populaire et culture savante : il montre comment l’élaboration d’une culture nationale dans les pays concernés prend en charge les problématiques de la transmission orale ou de la culture du divertissement. L’évolution du personnage permet ainsi de retracer l’invention d’une nouvelle catégorie esthétique, celle de l’art populaire.
