Engineers and Management in Germany and the United States : A Discussion of the Origins of Diversity in Management Systems

Le contraste entre le management général à l’américaine et le système allemand de Führung-leitung (gestion directoriale) en matière d’administration et d’organisation peut être approché à la fois dans la perspective institutionnelle, dans celle de l’autorité politique ou encore de l’organisation économique. L’article se concentre sur l’ascension des décideurs ingénieurs allemands et américains. Il suggère un certain nombre de raisons pour lesquelles ces types de décideurs perdirent leur position de pouvoir dans l’industrie américaine, alors qu’ils passèrent dans des positions exécutives supérieures en Allemagne. Il discute à la fois des aspects micro-historiques concernant les acteurs eux-mêmes et de considérations de nature macro-historique. Il suggère enfin une explication politico-institutionnelle pour les contrastes entre les systèmes de management.

The contrast between the American general-management and the German Führung-leitung systems in management and organisation may be approached from either an institutional, political authority or economic-organisational perspective. I focus on the rise of German and American engineering executives and suggest some reasons why these types of executives lost their positions of power in American industry, whereas they persisted in top executive positions in Germany. I discuss both the actor-centred and macro-historical assumptions of the various perspectives and suggest a combined political-institutional explanation for the contrasts in management systems.
